Gordon Foreshore Reserve, Gordon, TAS

Day 320 – 2nd January 2012
Gordon Foreshore Reserve, Gordon, TAS

We had a look around Southport before driving to Cockle Creek, the end of the road. From here we walked to South Cape Bay in the Southwest NP and had lunch at the most southerly point of Australia (15.4km return – 3h20). Afterwards we walked to Fishers Point enjoying the lovely views over Recherche Bay (4km return – 1h45). We drove back along the Huon River to Huonville where we did some shopping and filled up with fuel. Here we turned east and continued the scenic Huon Trail foreshore drive via Petcheys Bay, Cygnet and Egg and Bacon Bay to Gordon. This was a very pretty drive and well worth seeing.

Day 319 – 1st January 2012
Southport Hotel & Caravan Park, Southport, TAS

After a lazy morning – with a cup of milk at 10am to toast Belgian’s New Year - we drove into town and had lunch at The Taste Festival. There were so many stalls with all offering deliciously looking food, making it very hard to take a pick but we were finally able to make a choice and enjoyed a yummy New Year’s lunch. Afterwards we watched a street entertainer doing her hoola hoop show, before walking back to the van and driving to Southport along the Huon River Valley.

Day 318 – 31st December 2011
Hobart Showgrounds, Glenorchy, TAS

We got up at the crack of dawn and were walking by 6.30am. We walked from Lake Dobson via Rodway Range to K Col from where we climbed Mt Field West (1434m ASL), returning via Newdegate Pass and the Tarn Shelf Track (21.5km loop – 7h50). Another great scenic walk to finish 2011! Back at the van we drove straight to Hobart where we set up camp at the showgrounds and got ready to celebrate New Year’s Eve. We took the bus into town and walked around Constitution Dock admiring all the yachts that participated in the Sydney to Hobart Race. Next we found ourselves a table at Cargos Pizza Lounge along Salamanca Place and enjoyed delicious woodfire oven pizzas with a nice drop of wine. Just before midnight we walked to the waterfront to watch the fireworks. Afterwards we didn’t linger to long and took a spot in the queue at the taxi rank. We were only 10th in line but it still took over 1h before we got a cab home!
