Day 108 – 4th June 2011
Cable Beach Caravan Park, Broome, WA
Today was a very exciting day! We got up at 5am as we were being picked up at 5.30 by a 4WD truck/bus for our Horizontal Falls tour. We drove to Beagle Bay where we visited the Sacred Heart Church famous for its pearl altar. The road starts of as bitumen but soon turns into a dirt road which is extremely corrugated, sandy and uneven (glad we didn’t attempt this in the van). From here we continued on to Cape Leveque (Kooljaman) where we had a continental breakfast and a nice walk on the beach to view the rugged red cliffs. Back on the bus and off to the One Arm Point hatchery where you get a taste of the sea life – we saw Barramundi, turtles, clown fish and lots more. We were able to feed the Barramundi and they are amazingly quick. From here we jumped on a seaplane and took a 1/2h flight where we flew 500 feet above sea level and had fantastic views of the Buccaneer Archipelago Islands. The last part of the flight we circled the Horizontal Falls (Intense tidal currents hurtling through two narrow coastal gorges. Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage) where we then came in and landed into Talbot Bay – fantastic flight experience! Here we jumped on a 600hp fast boat and travelled out to the Horizontal Falls. We got to experience driving through the falls, all to the sounds of the Top Gun theme song “Danger Zone”. Next we got to swim in the “Shark and Croc safe” cage with some actual sharks and a groper swimming around. After a BBQ Barramundi lunch we got on the boat again and visited Cyclone Creek and the falls a second time. We finished off this wonderful day by hopping on the seaplane back to Broome with beautiful views of the Kimberley. We had a great time and would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Broome – it’s a great way to see the Buccaneer Archipelago Islands and surroundings which you can only see by air or boat.
