Day 143 – 9th July 2011
Gunlom Campsite, Kakadu National Park, NT
First thing this morning we went for a walk to the banks of a branch of the South Alligator River and up to Gungurul Lookout with views over the South Alligator Valley (4km return – 45min). We had a quick stop at Bukbukluk Lookout before continuing on to Yurmikmik. From here we walked to Yurmikmik Lookout - offering great views of the area, Motor Car Falls - providing a very scenic and beautiful secluded spot to have lunch and a dip in the pool and Kurrundie Falls - where we had to climb over huge boulders to get a view of the waterfall (In toal approx 12km return - 4h 30mins). Next we continued along the very corrugated road to Gunlom where we set up camp and decided to climb to the lookout and the Gunlom Top Pools for a swim (1km return – 40min). The scenery from the Top Pools is really magnificent so definitely worth the hike up – you could quite easily sit up there all day with a book, drink and nibbles. It has the natural version of an ‘edgeless’ pool overlooking the valley and woodlands below.
