Day 165 – 31st July 2011
Neil Hargrave Lookout, West MacDonnell National Park, NT
This morning we drove to Ellery Creek Big Hole where we had a look at the waterhole and did the Dolomite walk (3km loop – 45min). Afterwards we drove to Serpentine Gorge – classified as 4WD but although it was a rougher gravel road there really was no problem for a 2WD if you take it slowly. We walked to the gorge and up to a lookout with views deeper in the gorge (3.5km return – 1.5h). After lunch we continued on to Ochre Pits, a site that has been used by the local Aboriginal people for centuries. From there you can access the long distance Larapinta trail so we did a short part of it and walked to Inarlanga Pass at the foot of the Heavitree Range (9km return – 3h). We spent the night at a nearby lookout on the Namatjira Drive where we enjoyed a nice sunset over the ranges.
