Day 164 – 30th July 2011
Point Howard Lookout, West MacDonnell National Park, NT
After the necessary grocery shopping and refuelling we set off to the West MacDonnell Ranges. Just out of town on the Larapinta Drive we had a quick stop at John Flynn’s Grave, the founder of the RFDS. We continued on to Simpsons Gap where a short walk leads to the gap and a small waterhole. On the way back to Larapinta Drive we stopped at the Cassia Hill walk (1.5km loop - 45min), which leads to a nice lookout over Simpsons Gap and the Eastern end of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Afterwards we drove to Stanley Chasm where we had lunch before setting of on a walk to the chasm and the Larapinta Hill Lookout with again spectacular views of the surrounding area (3km return – 1.5h). We stopped at Point Howard Lookout and decided it was a good place to set up camp for the night.
