Day 292 – 5th December 2011
Numeralla River Rest Area, NSW (20km North of Cooma)

This morning we drove into Australian Capital Territory to visit Canberra for the day. First stop was the Australian War Memorial offering a nice view down Anzac Parade to Parliament House. As the building doesn’t open till 10am we drove up Mt Ainsley Lookout offering great views over Canberra and a good way to get a perspective of how architect Walter Burley Griffin planned the city. Afterwards we drove back to the Australian War Memorial to admire the glorious Hall of Memory with its Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier and had a look through the WWI, WWII and other exhibits in the museum. We caught up for lunch with Rene, a colleague of Andrew at the GHD Canberra office. In the afternoon we visited the interesting National Museum of Australia (you could spend days in Canberra’s museums), before crossing Lake Burley Griffin to Capital Hill where we visited Parliament House (The Great Hall, House of Representatives, Senate. Afterwards we drove around to view more notable buildings (Old Parliament House, Aboriginal Tent Embassy, National Library of Australia, National Portrait Gallery) and have a look at the Belgian Embassy. Late afternoon we left Australia’s capital city and ACT towards Cooma.
