Day 108 – 4th June 2011
Cable Beach Caravan Park, Broome, WA

Today was a very exciting day! We got up at 5am as we were being picked up at 5.30 by a 4WD truck/bus for our Horizontal Falls tour. We drove to Beagle Bay where we visited the Sacred Heart Church famous for its pearl altar. The road starts of as bitumen but soon turns into a dirt road which is extremely corrugated, sandy and uneven (glad we didn’t attempt this in the van). From here we continued on to Cape Leveque (Kooljaman) where we had a continental breakfast and a nice walk on the beach to view the rugged red cliffs. Back on the bus and off to the One Arm Point hatchery where you get a taste of the sea life – we saw Barramundi, turtles, clown fish and lots more. We were able to feed the Barramundi and they are amazingly quick. From here we jumped on a seaplane and took a 1/2h flight where we flew 500 feet above sea level and had fantastic views of the Buccaneer Archipelago Islands. The last part of the flight we circled the Horizontal Falls (Intense tidal currents hurtling through two narrow coastal gorges. Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage) where we then came in and landed into Talbot Bay – fantastic flight experience! Here we jumped on a 600hp fast boat and travelled out to the Horizontal Falls. We got to experience driving through the falls, all to the sounds of the Top Gun theme song “Danger Zone”. Next we got to swim in the “Shark and Croc safe” cage with some actual sharks and a groper swimming around. After a BBQ Barramundi lunch we got on the boat again and visited Cyclone Creek and the falls a second time. We finished off this wonderful day by hopping on the seaplane back to Broome with beautiful views of the Kimberley. We had a great time and would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Broome – it’s a great way to see the Buccaneer Archipelago Islands and surroundings which you can only see by air or boat.

Day 107 – 3rd June 2011
Cable Beach Caravan Park, Broome, WA

We spent the morning updating our blog. In the afternoon Nele went for another bike ride to town to explore Broome a bit more, while Andrew stayed at the caravan park to relax and find out what our options are to visit the Bungle Bungles as you need a 4WD - at the moment there are 54 creek crossings. Late afternoon we walked to Cable Beach to watch the famous camels on the beach at sunset.

Day 105 – 1st June 2011
Cable Beach Caravan Park, Broome, WA

We had to change caravan parks this morning as the Palm Grove is fully booked for the next few days – the high season has started! Went to town to shop before setting up at the Cable Beach Caravan Park with tent so we can enjoy sitting outside without being attacked by mosquitoes.  Late afternoon we drove to Gantheaume Point – home of the 130 million year old Dinosaur footprints (which can only be seen at very low tides) and Anastasia’s Pool, a small pool carved in the rock for a former lighthouse keeper’s arthritic wife.

Day 104 – 31st May 2011
Palm Grove Caravan Park, Broome, WA

There are many different tours on offer leaving from Broome and visiting the Kimberley either by 4WD or from the air. We’ve booked a day tour to the Horizontal Falls. As the next available tour is not till Saturday we’ve decided Broome will be the place to kick back and relax for the next 4 days. So we spent the day relaxing at the caravan park. Late afternoon we went for a drive to Broome’s port before getting ready to go out for dinner at the Old Zoo CafĂ©. Nice food but the service was slow.

Day 103 – 30th May 2011
Palm Grove Caravan Park, Broome, WA

Today we hopped on our bikes and went for a ride to discover Broome, known as the ‘pearl of the North’. We visited the Japanese cemetery where hundreds of pearl divers are buried – Broome was founded as a pearling port in the late 1880s and is still producing the world’s finest pearls. Had a look at Chinatown, Streeter’s Jetty (with a warning sign of a recent crocodile sighting!) and Sun Pictures, the world’s oldest operating open-air picture gardens. Back at the caravan park we went for a refreshing dip in the pool.

We drove into Port Hedland mid morning. Port Hedland is another mining port, so very industrial and not really a touristy place. Had a quick look at the port from the town’s jetty at Marapikurrinya Park and the town’s Cemetery Beach (a bit of a weird name for a beach) before filling up with fuel to continue our way to Broome.
