It was pouring when we woke up so we turned around and snoozed a bit longer. Not long after some sun started to come through the clouds so we got up and drove to Cape Bruny on Labillardiere Peninsula where we first had breakfast before tackling the steep hill up to the lighthouse and strong winds that almost blew us over. Next we drove to Jetty Beach and went for a walk along the short Luggobine Circuit, offering great coastal views (4.7km circuit – 1h). We continued on to Cloudy Bay for lunch and a short walk to Whalebone Point Lookout. Next we took the Coolangatta “Mountain” Road to Adventure Bay with stops at 2 lookouts along the way. At Adventure Bay we walked to Grass Point and Fluted Cape offering views of Penguin Island and the coast (5.4km loop – 2h15). We returned to the Neck Campsite for the night.

Day 321 – 3rd January 2012
The Neck Campground, Bruny Island, TAS

After tea yesterday we noticed one of our “kitchen” drawers wasn’t closing properly. Further investigation revealed our hot water tank stored under the drawer cabinet has expanded. Not sure how and why this has happened and what we should do. We had planned to get up early to catch the first ferry over to Bruny Island as it get’s quite busy with long waiting queues during the holiday season, but as we weren’t sure whether it was safe to drive with our expanded water tank (as this is linked to the engine for heating). Instead we waited till KEA’s office in Sydney opened to call up and find out more about this issue. We finally got on to someone who was able to tell us that they had experienced this before and it should be okay to continue driving. We will need to replace it when we get back to Adelaide before selling the van. We arrived at the ferry at 10.30am and there was indeed quite a queue. Luckily they are working with increased ferry runs during this peak time so we were on the ferry by noon. It takes only a short 15 min to cross over to Roberts Point on Bruny Island! We drove out to Dennes Point, the most northerly point, where we had lunch. Afterwards Andrew had a snooze (he didn’t sleep much last night worrying about the water tank) and Nele went for a walk along Nebraska Beach to Blighs Point and via the jetty to Kelly’s Point. When sleeping beauty had woken up we continued on to do the Cape Queen walk taking us past Big Lagoon, Mars Bluff and Miles Beach to the Cape, providing scenic views towards the Isthmus and South Bruny Island (6km return – 3h). Afterwards we drove to our campsite with a stop at Big Hummock Lookout with views over North and South Bruny Island joined by the narrow isthmus called The Neck.
