Day 309 – 22nd December 2011
Waratah Camping & Caravan Park, Waratah, TAS

Day 8 of 8 – Overland Track
Narcissus Hut to Cynthia Bay (17km, 60m ascent/descent)

We got up bright and early to walk the last stretch of the Overland Track to Cynthia Bay along Lake St Clair. After walking 2.5h through forest we got to Echo Point., a beautiful spot to take in the scenery of Lake St Clair.  We had a break at the jetty before continuing on for another 3h to arrive at the Lake St Clair Visitor Centre. After 7.5 days of walking we were glad to finally reach our end destination and take our backpacks off. Andrew signed the log book to register we had completed the walk.

A recap of our Overland Track Hike:

Overland Track      90.9km - with big and very heavy backpacks at the start
Side Trips                 35.6km
Total Distance        126.5km

We enjoyed spectacular views along the track and especially on top of the 5 mountains we climbed, walked through different types of forest, saw plenty of wildlife (snakes, pademelons, birds, echidna sand wombats), met nice people along the way and had a great time (despite the sore hips, shoulders and legs). At the visitor information centre we had lunch whilst we waited for our charter bus to pick us up. We got a pleasant surprise as 2 more passengers had booked on the bus, reducing our fare from $400 to $200. We were driven via the Great Lake back to Cradle Mountain with nice views and accompanying commentary from the bus driver. At Cradle Mountain we hopped into the van and drove to Waratah where we booked into the caravan park and enjoyed a very long and hot shower!
