It was still raining this morning so we enjoyed a sleep-in. Afterwards we did some grocery shopping and visited the koala hospital. Each year they treat about 300 koalas who are usually injured by cars while trying to cross the road. Afterwards we drove to the beach to watch the body boarders and surfers as they don’t let a bit of rain stop them from having fun with the waves. The ocean water was looking very brown (usually it is nice and blue), caused by the river water carrying lots of dirt entering in the mouth nearby, and there was lots of foam on the beach. After lunch Andrew worked on the blog and Nele almost finished the Flemish book she’s reading. Late afternoon it finally cleared up and we went for a walk along the foreshore to town. Having seen Port Macquarie in better conditions we felt there was no reason to stick around any longer. On our way out of town we stopped at the same lookouts as yesterday to get some better photos. We drove past Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills before arriving at North Haven where we stayed for the night.

This morning we took the back way via Maria River Road (unsealed road full of nasty potholes and water over the road as the surrounding farmland can’t handle all the rain that has been coming down) and Hastings River ferry crossing at Riverside Drive into Port Macquarie. We had booked the van in at the local Ford dealer to check out some issues we have been encountering lately (bad smelling exhaust fumes and loss of power after stalling the van). They had a courtesy bus that took us into town where we went for a short stroll to look at the River Inlet but as it was raining we didn’t walk far. We had a lovely lunch at Beantree CafĂ© before taking the courtesy bus back as they were finished with the van. Diagnosis was set that the exhaust valve needs to be replaced so we have booked in the van for next week at a Newcastle Ford dealer. Afterwards we went for a drive along the coast to various lookouts and the Tacking Point Lighthouse. Even though it hasn’t stopped raining and it’s pretty grey at the moment you can still see the beauty of this coastline.

We had another rainy day today! After breaky we drove to Arakoon to have a look at Trial Bay and its historic Trial Bay Goal Ruins. Next we drove to Little Bay Beach in Arakoon State Conservation Area where we saw some kangaroos fighting – hadn’t seen boxing roos before. We continued on to Smoky Cape Lighthouse where it started raining a lot heavier while we were walking up the steep hill up. The views weren’t the best but we could imagine what it would be like with clear blue skies. Afterwards we drove to Hat Head for lunch. Andrew didn’t mind getting wet and went for a walk to Korogoro Point Lookout on top of Hat Hill in Hat Head NP. Great place but there isn’t much more you can do in the rain! We took the tourist drive to Crescent Head, where we drove up to Big Nobby Lookout with views over the town’s beach and Little Nobby.
