Bert Nichols Hut, Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, TAS
Day 5 of 8 – Overland Track
Kia Ora Creek to Bert Nichols Hut (10km, 240m ascent, 200m descent)
Side Trip: D’Alton & Fergusson Falls (1km return, 120m ascent/descent)
Hartnett Falls (1.5km return, 80m ascent/descent)
Last night is started raining and it was still pretty wet this morning so we took it very easy and didn’t leave till 10am. We’ve been very lucky with the weather and if it had to rain than today was the “best” day. We walked for 45min before reaching historic Du Cane Hut and another 45min to the sidetrack leading to impressive D’Alton and Fergusson Falls. Back on the track we walked to the Hartnett Falls turn-off. We descended down into the gorge to get a great view of the falls. Back at the backpacks we had a short lunch break before walking via Du Cane Gap to our next hut. It was raining on and off today but the walk wasn’t too bad. The remainder of the afternoon we relaxed at the hut (Nele writing down some blog notes and Andrew reading up about Tasmania to plan our trip after we’ve finished our Overland Track adventure).
