Day 190 – 25th August 2011
Lake Koombooloomba Campsite, Koombooloomba Conservation Park, QLD

This morning we arrived at Ravenshoe, the highest town in QLD (920m). On the way into town we stopped at Millstream Falls (1km return - 30 min) and did a short WWII heritage walk (1km loop – 20min). In town we did our usual stop at the visitor information centre to gather all the necessary maps and info of the region. After some quick grocery shopping and refuelling we drove to Little Millstream Falls (700m return – 25min). After lunch we continued on to Tully Falls National Park where we went for a walk along the Koolmoon Creek track, part of the Misty Mountains – a 130km network of walking tracks providing access to the rainforests of Tully Gorge, Tully Falls and Wooroonooran National Parks. This Koolmoon Creek headwaters walk (7.6km loop – 2.5h) turned out to be quite interesting, not for the scenery but for the many leeches we encountered on our way. Nele noticed a black curly thingy on her shoe which appeared to be a leech – further investigation showed there were a lot more crawling around than just the one! So the rest of the walk we kept looking at our shoes and legs and pulling the leeches away. We have decided to rename this area to Leechy Mountains instead of Misty Mountains! Next we continued on to Tully Gorge Lookout before driving to Lake Koombooloomba where we set up camp for the night.
