Dampier Transit Caravan Park, Dampier, WA

Day 91– 18th May 2011
Dampier Transit Caravan Park, Dampier, WA

Arrived into Karratha at midday and got information for the region at the Visitor Centre. After a visit to the Red Dog Memorial on the way into Dampier, we set up at the caravan park and did some washing before driving to Hearson’s Cove for the spectacular natural phenomenon known as the Staircase to the Moon. It is caused by the rising of the full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide – creating an optical illusion of stairs reaching to the moon. This only occurs along the coastline between Onslow and Broome from March to October. We were fortunate with our timing as it only happens 3 days in the month! Well worth seeing if you are in the region.

Be aware of stray stock on the road

We think they hit a cow (most likely between dusk and dawn -
hence why we don't drive at that time)
