Day 270 – 13th November 2011
Stotts Island Nature Reserve Rest Area, NSW (14km Northeast of Murwillumbah)
This morning we enjoyed a sleep-in and after breakfast Nele went for a walk around the campsite trying her luck at some bird photography. As Andrew had in the mean time started watching a movie, Nele took off on another walk to Python Rock Lookout (3km return – 45min). Afterwards we drove back down the mountain to Canungra and on to Natural Bridge in Springbrook NP via another winding but scenic route. At Natural Bridge we had lunch and took the short walking circuit to the base of the falls and the natural bridge (1km loop – 20min). Next we continued on and reached the QLD-NSW border with a great lookout over the Tweed Valley. At Numinbah we bought some lovely fresh tomatoes and mangoes at a roadside fruit & veg stall. We continued on to Murwillumbah where we drove to the Lions Lookout with views of Mt Warning, a distinct volcano named by Captain Cook to warn seafarers of the offshore reefs. We finished the day with a short drive to the base of Mt Warning but didn’t have enough time to climb the peak which is the first part of mainland Australia to be touched by sunlight each day.
