Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park, Karumba, QLD

Day 187 – 22nd August 2011
Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park, Karumba, QLD

This morning we continued the drive to Normanton. Yesterday and today we saw quite a few animals on the road: feral pigs (dead and alive), feral cats (alive – preying on the birds enjoying a roadkill meal), cows (on and off the road), kangaroos (dead and alive), lots of birds such as cockatoos, crows, brolgas, green parrots, hawks and a bird resembling an emu. Once and a while you can also spot a broken down car which is left behind as the towing cost is probably more than what the car is worth. On top the highway is a single lane road with gravel sides so each time an oncoming vehicle approaches you need to slow down and go halfway off the bitumen, definitely not good for efficient fuel consumption! At Normanton we popped into the visitor information centre and after a quick lunch and refuelling we drove to Karumba. A look around town taught us that Karumba is the centre of the Gulf’s prawn and barramundi industry so we couldn’t resist and had to buy some fresh prawns. Once we got settled at the caravan park at Karumba Point, Nele went for a walk along the beach while Andrew relaxed at the caravan park. After a very refreshing swim in the pool (the water was freezing), we set off to view the sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria. Tonight we enjoyed our yummy prawns with salad and bread!
