Day 238 – 12th October 2011
Forrest Beach Caravan Park, Forrest Beach, QLD

After breakfast we drove to Cardwell where we stopped at the visitor information centre to gather more info on the Thorsborne Trail, a 4-day hike covering 32km on the nearby Hinchinbrook Island. We watched a dvd on the trail and got very excited however its getting quite hot to walk as the humidity is increasing heavily this time of year, also ferry costs and transportation back to Cardwell from Lucinda are not cheap and on top the ferry time to return from the island is dependant on low tide times and wasn’t working out for us to be able to do the walk in 4 days. We’d either have to stay another night on the island or walk a long distance on the third day. Not yet experienced in the overnight hiking (walking with a heavy backpack all day) we don’t want to shorten the walk to 3 days and don’t really want to spend another day on the island as there is still so much more to see and do on the hike.  So we decided to give it a miss and put it on our to-do list. Instead we visited the historic Cardwell Post Office & Bush Telegraph Station and drove to Port Hinchinbrook to view the new marina. After lunch we set off on the forest drive but couldn’t go further than the Cardwell Lookout as the road was closed. The lookout offered nice views over Cardwell town, coast, marina and surrounding area. We had a good chat to some Sydneysiders who were enjoying the view as well. We finally continued south to Five Mile Creek waterhole for a refreshing swim. Next we turned east to Lucinda, a pleasant little seaside town claiming to have the world’s longest offshore sugar loading facility, a jetty stretching 5.7km out to sea. We made a quick stop at neighbouring Dungeness, where the boat wharf offers a great view on Hinchinbrook Island, before continuing on to Taylors Beach and our destination for the night Forrest Beach whilst enjoying a beautiful sunset along the way.
