Suburban Street, Airlie Beach, QLD

Day 242 – 16th October 2011
Suburban Street, Airlie Beach, QLD

Last night was a bit noisy with quite a few road trains travelling past so we set off early and continued our way into Bowen. We drove to Queens Beach where we had breakfast. Next we continued on to Horseshoe Bay via Mt Nutt Lookout and a stop at the local markets. At Horseshoe Bay we went for a walk to Rose Bay via Murray Bay with lots of nice views of the coast along the way (4km return – 1h30). Back at the van we decided to drive to Rose Bay for a swim and had lunch there. Next we drove to Flagstaff Hill Lookout offering great views over Kings Beach, the town centre and the Coral Sea, before having a look at Front Beach with its famous jetty. Bowen was used as the movie set for the Darwin bombing in the “Australia” movie featuring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Afterwards we had a quick look at some of the murals scattered around town depicting the town’s history. We left Bowen and continued on our way to Airlie Beach with a detour to Dingo Beach and Hydeaway Bay – 2 very nice quiet towns. At Airlie Beach we had a look at the marina and the swimming lagoon before driving to neighbouring Cannonvale to have dinner at the foreshore.
