Smalleys Beach Campsite, Cape Hillsborough National Park, QLD

Day 245 – 19th October 2011
Smalleys Beach Campsite, Cape Hillsborough National Park, QLD

The weather was still gloomy with a bit of drizzle so after breakfast we travelled down the mountain back to Finch Hatton – less misty than the drive up so we got to see a bit more of the valley. We decided to drive out to Finch Hatton Gorge where we went for a walk to Araluen Cascades and attempted to get to the Wheel of Fire but where stopped by a ragging creek we couldn’t cross without getting wet (3.5km return – 1h). If the weather were nice this would be a great place to spend the afternoon with a swim. Instead we continued on our way to Cape Hillsborough National Park. We drove to Smalleys Beach campground, where we encountered a couple of snakes on the road that wouldn’t move and even started hissing at the tyres – pretty scary. Afterwards Andrew looked them up on google and they turned out to be carpet pythons, which are non-venomous. Well they seemed pretty aggressive to us so we wouldn’t go near them and were glad we were in the car. We had lunch before driving to the actual cape where we went for another walk along Andrews Point Track to the Twin Beach, Turtle, Andrews Point and Wedge Island Lookouts (5km loop – 1h20). Afterwards we went for a drive to Ball Bay, yet another sleepy little coastal town.
